Kauai Chapter

Who We Are

The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 90 chapters worldwide.

The Kauai Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation was founded in August 2006 by a small group of Kauai’s active surfers who joined the national organization with its focus on CARE: Conservation, Activism, Research, and Education. We have an appetite for adventure and we all share a common passion – we love and appreciate our ocean, waves and beaches.  We are an organization of committed volunteers.

Our local Kauai programs include Net Patrol and Beach Cleanups to keep our beaches free of marine debris; Blue Water Task Force (Water Quality Monitoring) to check the water quality at surfbreaks, beaches, and streams; Ocean Friendly Gardens to keep polluted runoff from entering the ocean; Ocean Friendly Restaurants to reduce the amount of plastics and Styrofoam going in to the ocean; and Ocean Friendly Visitors to share “best behaviors” that help visitors participate in our mission to protect Kauai’s beaches and ocean. We have a marine debris education program and involve students in Marine Debris Art.
