Ocean Friendly Restaurant Coordinator

Ruta retired to Kauai from coastal Maine, where she helped start "Plastic Free Lubec." She currently actualizes her passion for a plastic-free world through the Kauai chapter of Surfrider Foundation's Ocean Friendly Restaurants and Zero Waste Kauai.

Barbara Levin

Social Media, Ocean Friendly Visitors Coordinator

Barbara is passionate about keeping our oceans clean and protecting marine life. She‘s a lover of whales and all marine mammals. At Surfrider Barbara created and manages the Ocean Friendly Visitors program to help visitors protect Kauai’s ocean, reefs, beaches and marine life.

Carl Berg

Senior Scientist

Carl is a research scientist, working on water quality issues in Hawaii for nearly 30 years. He is also also involved with plastic marine debris pollution and recycling.

Barbara Wiedner

Co-Coordinator for Beach Cleanup and Net Patrol

Barbara is passionate about protecting Kauai"s ocean environment and educating on this topic She has been involved with Surfrider Kauai since 2006.
Barbara loves surfing, swimming and hiking with her dogs!

Scott McCubbins

Treasurer, Co-Coordinator of Beach Cleanup and Net Patrol

Scott enjoys protecting sea life, and has a goal to see Kauai's beaches and coastline look pristine. He moved from Kansas City Missouri to Kauai Hawaii in 2012. He has worked in the Travel Industry since 1989 and has the privilege to travel to the Hawaiian Island several times, and has decided to make Kauai his current home. He's a sports enthusiasts, and enjoys hiking, biking and traveling.

Cynthia Welti

Secretary, Ocean Friendly Gardens Coordinator

Cynthia does high tech work remotely to enable her to live on Kauai, supporting her passion for the ocean. When not on the computer she enjoys swimming out beyond the breakers and gardening, which really translates as weeding.

Gordon LaBedz


Gordon was a founding member of the national Surfrider Foundation and has been active in the organization for its 26 year history. He was the architect and organizer of the chapter network, as well as the Blue Water Task Force and most of the current programs that are still going today. He lives in west Kauai with his wife Diana LaBedz who has also been a Surfrider Foundation leader for over a dozen years.

Rob Brower

Vice Chair

45 year veteran surfer and diver; 40 year resident of Kauai; custom home builder, Emphasis on sustainability. "We as a species naturally protect what we love; now more than ever we require a critical mass of humans who truly love the ocean."
