Rob Brower is a 45 year veteran surfer and diver; 40 year resident of Kauai; custom home builder with an emphasis on sustainability. "We as a species naturally protect what we love; now more than ever we require a critical mass of humans who truly love the ocean."

VICE CHAIR 

Kat Brickner

Kat has been enthralled with the ocean ever since she was a toddler thanks to her mother and today is an avid water-woman in many areas. She has logged several scientific dives working with Operation Wallacea. She has learned to sail and lived abroad on research vessels, she has worked as an aquarist and educator from a young age. Kat is involved with multiple nonprofits centered around nature and the ocean. Her personal motto is, “volunteers make the community!”

Barbara is passionate about protecting Kauai's ocean environment and educating on this topic She has been involved with Surfrider Kauai since 2006. Barbara loves surfing, swimming and hiking with her dogs!

Scott enjoys protecting sea life, and has a goal to see Kauai's beaches and coastline look clean and pristine. He moved from Kansas City Missouri to Kauai Hawaii in 2012. He worked in the Travel Industry for 35 years. He's a sports enthusiast, and enjoys hiking, biking and traveling with his wife Lori.

Denise Marchacos

Denise Marchacos is a dedicated environmentalist and founder of Malama Waters, a nonprofit committed to reducing plastic waste and preserving Kauai’s precious marine ecosystems. Fueled by her deep love for the ocean, Denise is leading efforts to install refillable filtered water stations across the island, encouraging locals and tourists alike to opt for sustainable hydration. She is also a strong advocate for reef-safe sunscreens and works to protect marine life, ensuring a cleaner, healthier future for the aina, Kauai’s waters and wildlife. Denise's passion for ocean conservation drives her mission to inspire others to care for the planet as much as she does.

Carl is a research scientist, working on water quality issues in Hawaii for nearly 30 years. He has published papers on Kauai Surfrider's research on glyphosate pollution in honey, identification of human waste in our streams, and how ocean dynamics determine abundance of marine debris on our shores

 

 


Gordon LaBedz, M.D.

Gordon was a founding member of the national Surfrider Foundation and has been active in the organization for its 40 year history. He was the architect and organizer of the chapter network, as well as the Blue Water Task Force and many of the current programs that are still going today. He lives in west Kauai with his wife Diana LaBedz who has also been a Surfrider Foundation leader for many years.

Barbara Levin

Barbara is passionate about keeping our oceans clean and protecting marine life. She‘s a lover of whales and all marine mammals. At Surfrider Barbara created and manages the Ocean Friendly Visitors program to help visitors protect Kauai's ocean, reefs, beaches and marine life.
